Design Technology & Construction
At Links we teach Design and Technology at KS3 and B Tech Construction Level 1 at KS4.
At KS3 pupils combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs. This could mean that we look at anthropometric data and use this to make a fidget spinner to fit their exact hand size, or that we research, using the internet to gain some ideas to make a table to fit in a small space in a bedroom. Whatever it is we are making we do research into existing products, look at a variety of materials that could be used and methods to join them together. This could range from using the laser cutter and plywood to hand cutting mortise and tenon joints in softwood.
At KS4 student follow the B Tech Construction course to gain either an Award, Certificate or beyond. Students make projects that tie in with their personal interests and include skills that are transferable to the Construction Industry should they continue to study this at college. Recent projects have been making outdoor seating, storage for a collection of trainers, jewellery boxes and a coffee table engraved using the laser cutter.
